Morganton, N.C. – Allea Hawkins shot a team-best 78 in the final round to help the USC Upstate women’s golf team move up a spot on the final leaderboard Monday afternoon at the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate played at the Mimosa Hills Country Club.
The tournament was hosted by Appalachian State and the Mountaineers shot a 297 in the final round to win the team championship. The Mountaineers finished with a tournament total of 600. St. Leo finished second at 602 and was followed by Charleston Southern (604), Western Carolina (606), Wofford (609), Gardner-Webb (619), Winthrop (629), Longwood (636), Bethune-Cookman (645), Upstate (646), Presbyterian (648) and Sandhills CC (701). Winthrop’s Jennifer Dilger won the individual championship with a 144 total.
Upstate counted scores of 78 from Hawkins, 79 from Eden Howard, 81 from Rachel Reiling and 83 from Sidney Dermody to shoot 320. Payton Culler carded an 85, while Malika Allie, playing as an individual, shot an 82.
Howard played the final 11 holes at 1-under and led the Upstate cause in the tournament while finishing tied for 31st with a 158 total. Hawkins claimed a tie for 35th with a 160 total and Reiling was tied for 45th with a 164 total.
“I am proud of Allea for posting a good score for us and for Eden overcoming a slow start and finishing her round strong,” said Upstate head coach Todd Lawton. “Rachel has been battling a tight back, but was able to contribute as well.”
Upstate will now turn its attention to the A-Sun Championships next week at Reunion Golf Club in Orlando, Fla., April 12-14. The Spartans are making their seventh appearance in the tournament and will look to improve on its best finish of eighth in 2010 and 2013.
