Macon, Ga. – USC Upstate senior Jake McKown was recognized on Wednesday by the Atlantic Sun Conference as its Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week following his performance on Apr. 22 at the Carolina’s Cup, it was announced this afternoon.
McKown combined for two top-five finishes last week at the one day event hosted by Winthrop. The Greer, S.C. native, competing in the javelin for the first time in his career, turned in the top throw for the conference this season of 49.03-meters while breaking a six-year old school record to finish third. His throw surpassed the old record of 44.20-meters set by Kyle Wentzel at the 2009 Wofford Dual Meet.
The senior also recorded his first top-five performance of the year in the 400-meter hurdles after running a time of 56.05 for a fifth place finish.
McKown is the second Upstate male athlete to receive weekly recognition from the A-Sun this season. Blake Hayes was named A-Sun Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week on Mar. 25.
The Spartans are back in action May 15-16 at the A-Sun Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Jacksonville, Fla.
