For the third week in a row, USC Upstate’s Lexi Shubert has been named the A-Sun Pitcher of the Week for softball after leading the Spartans to four wins in four games last week.
Shubert is the first Upstate softball player to earn a weekly honor from the A-Sun in three consecutive weeks in the history of the program. She is also the first pitcher since 2010 (Lipscomb’s Whitney Kiihnl) to earn three-straight pitcher of the week awards in the A-Sun.
Shubert went 4-0 last week, earning the decision in all four games. She finished the week with a 1.09 ERA and 20 strikeouts in 19 1/3 innings of work. She allowed three runs on 13 hits and walked just one batter.
“It has certainly been exciting to watch Lexi work this year,” said Upstate head coach Chris Hawkins. “There is a level of comfort when she is out in the circle. Every time she steps out there, I feel like we have a pretty good shot at winning the game whoever we are playing. I am happy she is getting the recognition she deserves and proud of the person and player she is.”
Shubert began the week on a bit of a shaky note despite earning the win against Presbyterian. She gave up three runs in the first inning against the Blue Hose, but shut down the PC bats the rest of the game as Upstate came back to win by a 4-3 margin. She was then flawless the rest of the week. Following the first inning against PC, she tossed 18 1/3 innings of scoreless ball.
Shubert was sensational in leading Upstate to a three-game A-Sun sweep at Florida Gulf Coast over the weekend. She won all three games with two starts and one relief appearance. She began the series by scattering six hits over six innings to record an 8-0 shutout of the Eagles. She also struck out seven along the way. She threw 1 1/3 innings of relief in game two of the series, entering the game after FGCU had tied the game at 2-2. She did not allow a hit or a run in her relief effort as Upstate took a 7-2 victory. She finished the series out by tossing a one-hitter in the Spartans’ 13-0 five-inning romp over the Eagles in the series finale.
Shubert has now earned four A-Sun Pitcher of the Week honors in her career. She ranks third all-time at Upstate in weekly honors behind all-time great pitcher Morgan Childers (9) and current Spartan Shellie Robinson (6). Cheyenne Griffin has earned two A-Sun Player of the Week honors this season, while Kendall Settlemyre has one.
