Macon, Ga. – The USC Upstate men’s tennis team was well represented on Wednesday when the Atlantic Sun announced its postseason all-conference awards, as Ramon Simonetti was selected to the first team, Ignacio Garrido and Rajanvir Dharni to the second team and Felix Ewers and Garrido to the All-Freshman Team.
Simonetti finished the season first on the team with 11 singles victories and was tied for the second-most of anyone in the conference at the No. 1 position. Simonetti was also 5-1 in conference play and was one of only two players in the A-Sun with five league wins from the No. 1 position. The Passo Fundo, Brazil, native won his last three matches to help Upstate earn the No. 3 seed in the upcoming A-Sun Championships.
Garrido turned in nine singles wins in his rookie season at Upstate and posted a perfect 6-0 record in league play from the No. 4 position. He enters the A-Sun Championships having won his last eight matches. In addition to his singles success, Garrido also went 8-6 in doubles play, 4-1 in league play and has won three of his last four matches.
Dharni was a perfect 3-0 in league play and earned all of his conference wins from the No. 5 position. He won the clinching point Saturday against Kennesaw State to help Upstate post a 5-2 victory over the Owls and secure a third place finish in the conference standings.
Ewers posted a 4-2 record against A-Sun competition playing primarily from the No. 6 position.
Upstate begins its quest for an A-Sun championship Friday at 2:30 p.m. when the third-seeded Spartans face No. 6 seed Northern Kentucky in the conference tournament from Jacksonville, Fla.
