Nashville, Tenn. – The USC Upstate men’s tennis team turned in a 6-0 shutout of Lipscomb Thursday morning from Huston-Marsh-Griffith Tennis Center and earned a berth in the A-Sun Championships.
Due to anticipated rain expected in the early afternoon, the two teams decided prior to the match to begin with singles play.
Spartan junior Jamie Yates gave Upstate a 1-0 lead when he turned in a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Phillipe Courteau at No. 3, and Rajanvir Dharni put the Spartans ahead 2-0 following his 6-3, 6-3 win over Alex Pavel at No. 5.
Senior Viktor Selander extended the lead to 3-0 after he defeated Alejandro Manzanares 6-0, 7-6 at No. 2, and freshman Ignacio Garrido clinched the victory with his 6-2, 6-2 win over John Tougher at No. 4.
Felix Ewers continued Upstate’s winning ways with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Thais Minet at No. 6, and Ramon Simonetti completed the shutout following his 7-6, 1-6, 10-4 win at No. 1.
Upstate plays its final regular season road match Saturday at 1:30 p.m. when the Spartans travel to Highland Heights, Ky., to face Northern Kentucky.
