Upstate Drops Game One at Florida Gulf Coast

Fort Myers, Fla. – Nick Rivera hit two home runs and drove in three runs to lead Florida Gulf Coast to a 10-4 victory over USC Upstate Thursday in game one of a three-game series from Swanson Stadium.

Adam Eggnatz and Colton Bottomley each finished with three hits to help Florida Gulf Coast register xx hits.

Erik Samples, Charlie Carpenter, Cody Brittain and Drew Fisher each tallied two hits to lead the Spartans.

Florida Gulf Coast starting pitcher Jordan Desguin allowed four runs on eight hits to go along with nine strikeouts en route to his fourth win of the season. Upstate starting pitcher Brian Boocock (3-5) took the loss.

Florida Gulf Coast sent 12 men to the plate and registered eight hits on its way to plating eight runs in the third inning. Designated hitter Brady Anderson reached with a leadoff single through the left side and advanced to second on a bunt single from Eggnatz. After a sac bunt from Matt Reardon advanced both runners one base, Tyler Selesky picked up an RBI with a ground ball to the left side.

Jake Noll followed with a two-run double and Rivera hit an opposite field home run down the right field line to put the Eagles ahead 5-0. Florida Gulf Coast added RBI singles from Anderson and Eggnatz later in the inning to cap the scoring.

Rivera connected for his second home run and third RBI of the game when his fifth home run of the season sailed over the left field wall in the fourth inning.

Upstate capitalized on a pair of errors by Florida Gulf Coast in the fifth to score two runs and cut the lead to 9-2. Fisher reached to lead off the inning when Reardon threw wide of first base, and Samples singled two batters later and advanced to second and Fisher to third on an error in left field by Zach Spivey. Desguin threw wild pitches in consecutive at-bats to allow both Fisher and Samples to score.

The Spartans continued to chip away in the sixth inning and used RBIs from Fisher and Samples to cut the deficit to 9-4. Brittain reached on a one-out infield single and took second when Jaden Savage followed with a walk. Stephen Dowling singled through the left side to load the bases before Fisher slapped an RBI single through the right side that scored Brittain. Samples forced in Savage from third two batters later when he drew a bases loaded walk.

Reardon gave FGCU a 10-4 lead in the seventh with an RBI single to left field to become the ninth Eagle with at least one hit.

Upstate and Florida Gulf Coast continue a three-game series Friday at 6:30 p.m. with Blake Whitney matching up against Michael Murray.
