Upstate Opens Month with VertKlasse Meeting, Terrier Relays

The USC Upstate track and field team kicks off the month of April this weekend as it is scheduled to send six distance runners to the VertKlasse Meeting in High Point, N.C., while the remainder of the squad stays in town for the Terrier Relays.

Upstate is competing in two meets for the second straight week after going to both the Winthrop Invitational and Raleigh Relays last weekend.

The Spartans had Jasmine Polite, Essence Jackson and Griffin Eubanks run in the Raleigh Relays hosted by North Carolina State. Jackson had a best finish of 15th in the 800-meter run, while Polite and Eubanks both competed in the 5000-meter run.

Alexis Jacobs and Calin Schumacher led Upstate individually at the three-day Winthrop Invitational in Rock Hill, S.C. Jacobs recorded her second career victory in the shot put after posting a throw of 13.95-meters. She won the event by just .05 meters and held off a total of 69 competitors for the first place finish. Schumacher concluded the event last Saturday by compiling the top finish for the Spartan men as he placed fifth in the 800-meter run developmental following a time of 2:03.38. It was his second top-five finish of the season in the 800-meter run.

KeAndrea Ladson broke her own school record twice in the 100-meter hurdles while setting five personal-best marks. She qualified for the finals of the 100-meter hurdles after finishing sixth in the preliminaries with a school record time of 14.86. She followed the next day by breaking the record again in the finals after crossing the finish line in 14.63 to place sixth. Ladson also had a fifth place performance in the heptathlon. She tallied new personal-bests in the 100-meter hurdles, 200-meter dash, 800-meter run, shot put and heptathlon.

Upstate collected a total of 12 personal-best marks at the Winthrop Invitational. The Spartan women had six athletes record personal-bests in Ladson, Storm-Alexis Gandy, Brittany Walls, Kennedy Holton, Keiyonna Gusby and Meagan Bailey. On the men’s side, Upstate saw personal-best marks attained by Jaleel Williams, Donnie Hutchinson and Blake Hayes.

Eubanks is set to take part in the VertKlasse Meeting Friday evening along with Theordore Kountourogiannis, Mark Rennix, Martin Morrow, Alex Love and Cody Ellison. Kountourogiannis and Rennix are scheduled to race in the 5000-meter run at 5:35 p.m., while Morrow, Love, Ellison and Eubanks compete in the 10,000-meter run at 7:15 p.m.

The Terrier Relays will be held at Spartanburg High School on Saturday with the hammer event taking place on the Upstate campus. Admission to the event is free but there will be a $5 charge for parking.

The Spartans are off next weekend before heading back to Charlotte, N.C. Apr. 17-18 for the Charlotte Invitational.
