The USC Upstate track and field team makes the short trip to Rock Hill, S.C. Wednesday afternoon for the Carolina’s Cup hosted by Winthrop University at Irwin Belk Track.
Upstate is back on the track for the second time in three days after competing last weekend at the Charlotte Invitational in Charlotte, N.C. The Spartans set two school records while tallying two victories at the two-day event hosted by UNC Charlotte. Overall, Upstate recorded 32 top-10 performances and 19 personal-best marks.
Jasmine Polite led the Spartans on Friday by winning her second career race in the 5000-meters after posting a personal-best time of 17:19.34. Polite last won the 5000-meters during her sophomore season also at the Charlotte Invitational. The senior held off 13 runners and posted the fourth-fastest time in the A-Sun this season for the 5000-meter run.
The women’s 4×100-meter relay team of Semaj Tolliver, Dominique Nock, Heaven Briggs and Brenicke Johnson followed Polite the next day by holding off Appalachian State by .58 seconds to win the event in a time of 46.37. The win marks the second straight in the 4×100-meter relay as Nock, Briggs and Johnson teamed with Courtney Bradley to finish first at the Terrier Relays on Apr. 4.
KeAndrea Ladson and Destinie Sykes both surpassed their old school records on Saturday with Ladson in the 100-meter hurdles and Sykes the 400-meter hurdles. Ladson finished the 100-meter hurdles race in fourth with a personal-best time of 14.62, breaking her old record by .01 seconds. Sykes passed her old school record time in the 400-meter hurdles by less than a second as she placed fourth with a personal-best time of 1:04.49.
Griffin Eubanks turned in the top individual finish for the Upstate men after placing third in the 5000-meter run. He led a group of six runners to collect his second straight finish of third or better this season after crossing the finish line in a personal-best time of 15:12.77.
The Spartans are competing at Winthrop for the second time this season after taking part in the Winthrop Invitational Mar. 26-28. Alexis Jacobs led Upstate during the three-day event as she picked up her second career victory in the shot put. Jacobs held off a total of 69 competitors in the event and recorded a toss of 13.95-meters. The Spartans saw a total of 16 personal-bests achieved at the Winthrop Invitational.
The Carolina’s Cup is scheduled to begin at 4:15 p.m. Wednesday with the men’s and women’s hammer throw and will conclude at 8:45 p.m. with the running of the men’s and women’s 4×400-meter relay. The trophy presentation follows at 9 p.m.
Upstate is off until May 15-16 when it travels down to Jacksonville, Fla. for the A-Sun Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
