Morganton, N.C. – Eden Howard led the USC Upstate women’s golf team with a 79 as the Spartans opened the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate Sunday afternoon at the Mimosa Hills Country Club.
Appalachian State is hosting the 12-team event with 10 of the 12 teams hailing from the Carolinas. Upstate opened the tournament with a 326 and is 10th but well within striking distance of seventh place. The Spartans counted scores of 79 from Howard, 82 from Sidney Dermody and Allea Hawkins, and 83 from Rachel Reiling. Payton Culler carded an 87, while Malika Allie, who is playing as an individual, finished her round with a 91.
St. Leo opened the tournament with a 299 and owns the overnight lead heading into Monday’s final round. Charleston Southern is second at 301 and is followed by Appalachian State (303), Wofford (303), Western Carolina (304), Gardner-Webb (306), Winthrop (317), Bethune-Cookman (320), Longwood (321), Upstate (326), Presbyterian (330) and Sandhills CC (357).
Upstate is nine shots out of seventh place and within six of eighth, providing an opportunity to move up significantly on the leaderboard.
St. Leo’s Marie Coors opened the tournament with a 71 to take the individual lead after the first round. Upstate’s Howard stands tied for 27th after her 79, while Dermody and Hawkins are tied for 43rd.
