USC Upstate softball signee and 2015 incoming freshman Kori Wancheck has been named the South Carolina 4A Player of the Year by the South Carolina Coaches Association of Women’s Sports.
Wancheck just completed her senior season at Northwestern High School and led her Trojan team to the 4A District III championship and an appearance in the Upper State title game. She earned her fourth all-state honor en route to earning state player of the year accolades. She did so by being a force in the circle and at the plate.
Wancheck struck out 241 batters in 184 innings pitched this season. She finished the year with a 0.92 ERA and a .159 opponent batting average in leading Northwestern to a 22-6 record and just two wins shy of the 4A state championship series. She hit .512 with seven home runs and 33 RBIs at the plate.
Wancheck’s successful senior season capped a widely successful high school career. She was part of a team that led Northwestern to its first 4A state tournament appearance in more than 10 years in 2014. She led the Trojans to back-to-back District III championships in 2014 and 2015. She is a four-time all-state selection, a five-time all-region pick and a four-time all-area selection. She also earned all-region player of the year honors in 2014. Last year, she struck out 248 batters in 136 innings in the circle, while hitting .388 with four home runs and 22 RBIs at the plate.
Wancheck was one of nine players who signed to play at Upstate during the early signing period last November. The Spartans have added additional players this spring in an effort to replace the most accomplished senior class in the history of the program. Ten seniors played their final game two weeks ago when the Spartans finished play in their third-straight NCAA Tournament with a pair of losses to No. 20 Washington in the Tuscaloosa Regional. The senior class combined to lead Upstate to 171 wins, two A-Sun regular season championships, two A-Sun tournament championships and eight weeks ranked in the national Top 25 polls.
