Following a standout season where they led the Spartans to the A-Sun regular season championship, A-Sun Tournament title and the program’s third consecutive appearance in the NCAA Regionals, USC Upstate standouts Shellie Robinson and Lexi Shubert have been named Southeast all-region by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA).
Both Robinson and Shubert were named second team all-region with nearly all of the selections on the three all-region teams coming from Power 5 conference schools. Robinson is a four-time all-region selection after earning two first team and two second team honors in what has been a career filled with honors and accolades. She was also a third team All-American last year. Shubert earned her first all-region selection.
The all-region selections come on the heels of Robinson and Shubert garnering the A-Sun’s top honors. Robinson was named the league’s player of the year and Shubert was named the pitcher of the year. Both were the only two unanimous selections for first team all-conference honors.
“Shellie and Lexi have helped lead this team throughout the year and are more than deserving of this honor,” said Upstate head coach Chris Hawkins. “Shellie has had a great career and she built on her legacy this season by improving her numbers and results in nearly every aspect. Her ability to move around to play different positions in the outfield and go behind the plate as well is a testament to her athletic ability and willingness to do whatever she needs to help us achieve. Lexi has been as dominant a pitcher as we have had and proved it in and out of the A-Sun. I have been so impressed with her ability to put this team on her shoulders at times and lead us to a win. I am so happy for both Shellie and Lexi for being recognized for what they have meant for this team.”
Robinson has put a stamp on a legendary career during her senior season in 2015. She currently ranks second on the team with a .405 batting average (behind teammate Hayley Reinfeld’s gaudy .447 average) and leads the A-Sun with 22 home runs (eighth in the nation), an .893 slugging percentage, 63 runs and 59 RBIs. She helped lead the Spartans to shattering the school’s single-season record for home runs, entering the NCAA Tournament with 93 after belting a record 60 last year. She broke the all-time career school records for home runs, runs and slugging percentage and owns nearly every Division I era career school record including hits, home runs, doubles, runs, RBIs, batting average, slugging percentage and on-base percentage. She also has tied the A-Sun career runs record with 216 entering the NCAA Tournament and ranks second with 69 home runs (record 71) and a .807 slugging percentage.
Shubert enters the Tuscaloosa Regional with a 33-5 record and is third in the nation in victories behind the 34 of BYU’s McKenna Bull and San Diego State’s Erica Romero. She also ranks among the nation’s leaders in shutouts (9) and ERA (1.50). She leads the A-Sun in wins and ERA and is second in strikeouts, just two shy of the conference lead. She has won 33 of Upstate’s 43 games and won 15 of the Spartans’ 18 games during A-Sun play. She was named the A-Sun Tournament Most Valuable Player after leading Upstate to a sweep of the competition in the conference tournament with wins over North Florida and two against Lipscomb. She also picked up impressive marquee non-conference wins over No. 11 Georgia, NC State and North Carolina, all of which are NCAA Tournament teams.
Robinson and Shubert will lead Upstate (43-8) into action in the Tuscaloosa Regional this weekend. The Spartans open the regional against 20th-ranked Washington Friday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. Eastern on ESPNU. Host Alabama, ranked No. 5/6 in the nation, plays Fairfield in the other regional game on Friday.
