Thousands of people attended the grand opening of the Tryon International Equestrian Center Saturday.
The event also was the beginning of the Great Charity Challenge. In its first year, the challenge was created for the purpose of educating the public and assisting not-for-profit organizations located in and serving Spartanburg, Greenville, Polk, Rutherford, Henderson and Buncombe counties. Of more than 211 applications, only 14 charities were selected.
USC Upstate was the first of the charities to be selected. In the fall, the charities will be paired with a horse and rider team for a chance to receive at least $5,000 to $50,000.
