Macon, Ga. – USC Upstate senior outside hitter Kayla Eversgerd has been selected to the A-Sun Preseason All-Conference Team while the Spartans were predicted by the league’s coaches to finish seventh in the A-Sun Preseason Poll, it was announced this afternoon by the conference office.

Eversgerd becomes the first Upstate volleyball player in program history to earn the preseason recognition from the A-Sun after finishing last season as one of only two players in the conference to record over 300 kills and 300 digs.

“I cannot express how deserving Kayla is for her recognition as preseason all-conference,” said head coach Jennifer Calloway. “She has been a consistent player throughout her career as a Spartan and as the first player in school history to receive this honor from the A-Sun, I could not be happier for her. Along with her team, Kayla is looking forward to this season as we begin here in a couple of weeks.”

Eversgerd concluded the 2014 season ranked ninth in the A-Sun in digs with a team-high 383 while ranking 12th in kills after posting a team-leading 313. She compiled a team-best 17 double-doubles resulting in 22 matches with 10 or more digs and 17 with double-digit kills. Eversgerd set a new career-high for digs in a match after finishing with 34 at North Florida.

The senior from Germantown, Ill. also became just the sixth Spartan in school history to eclipse the 1,000 kill/1,000 dig career plateau after reaching the mark in the final match of the season. Eversgerd enters the year with 1,009 digs and 1,006 kills, and is currently ranked third all-time in career attack attempts with 3,483 and eighth in kills per set with 3.25.

Upstate garnered 20 points in the preseason poll and sits ahead of conference newcomer NJIT, who comes in at eighth with 16 points. Lipscomb, last year’s regular season champion, has been picked to win the league after receiving seven of eight first-place votes for a total of 63 points. Florida Gulf Coast picked up the other first-place vote and is projected second with 52 points. The defending conference tournament champions, Jacksonville, sit third with 41 points followed by North Florida in fourth at 38 points. Stetson (5th, 30 points) and Kennesaw State (6th, 28 points) round out the preseason poll.

Lipscomb’s Brittnay Estes and Kayla Ostrom have been voted the A-Sun Preseason Player and Setter of the Year, respectively, while Katarina Morton of Kennesaw State was tabbed A-Sun Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.

The Spartans open their season Aug. 28-29 at the Charlotte Invitational where they will face UNC Asheville, Charlotte and Davidson.
