Coming off a season that saw the team play its toughest tournament schedule ever, USC Upstate head men’s golf coach Todd Lawton has released the schedule for the 2015 fall season.
Upstate will play in five tournaments this fall, making return trips to four of the five tournaments. The lone exception is a big one as Upstate with partner with the A-Sun to host the Bridgestone Match Play at the Chateau Elan Resort in Braselton, Ga., the site of the 2016 A-Sun Championship in April. It marks the first men’s golf tournament the Spartans have hosted since the program was reestablished in 2005.
“Our fall schedule represents the best opportunity to play against schools from ACC, SEC and Big 10 conferences while playing at mostly familiar places,” said Lawton. “I’m extremely excited about the addition of the Bridgestone Match Play at the Legends course and the fact that our players will have the chance to play our A-Sun Championship course twice in the upcoming season. With Ryan leading some strong returning talent and a lot of guys who have worked hard this summer, I feel good about moving forward this season and seeing positive results.”
Upstate will open the season as host, along with the A-Sun, of the Bridgestone Match Play on Sept. 13-14 on the Legends Course at the Chateau Elan Resort. The course has hosted the A-Sun Championship for the last four years, five of the last six, and will serve as the host site of the conference tournament again in 2016. The Bridgestone will consist of four teams battling in a round robin format with eight players playing per team in each match. There will be three total matches with the winners of the first two matches playing for the tournament championship on the second day of the event.
Following the Bridgestone Match Play, Upstate will head to the Badger Invitational Sept. 27-29. The three-day, 54-hole tournament is being hosted by Wisconsin at University Ridge in Madison. It will be Upstate’s third consecutive appearance in the tournament. The Spartans finished third last year with Taylor White taking home second-place honors and Ryan Cornfield tying for third. The team finished fourth in 2013.
Upstate will make its second straight appearance at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate Oct. 5-6. NC State will host the tournament at the Lonnie Poole Golf Club in Raleigh in what has been a traditionally strong collegiate field.
Following the Wolfpack Intercollegiate, the Spartans will stay in the Palmetto State and travel just south of Columbia to play in the Camden Collegiate Invitational in Camden, S.C. The tournament is being hosted by South Carolina at the Camden Country Club. Cornfield finished in a tie for second and White was tied for 13th in the Spartans’ first-ever appearance in the event last year.
Upstate will close out the fall schedule at the Wendy’s Kiawah Intercollegiate Nov. 1-3. The three-day, 54-hole event is being hosted by Charleston Southern on the Turtle Point Course at the Kiawah Island Resort along the South Carolina coast. It will mark the fifth appearance in the tournament dating back to 2011. Cornfield will have the opportunity to defend his tournament championship from a year ago when he finished at 6-under-par to tie for medalist honors. It was the first individual tournament championship of his career and helped catapult him into an appearance in the 2015 NCAA Regionals as an individual.
Upstate returns all seven of its players from a year ago, and has added accomplished freshman Matt Carter to a veteran team. Cornfield and White are the team leaders on the course. Cornfield led the Spartans in stroke average (72.4), wins (1), Top 5 finishes (3), Top 10 finishes (6) and winning percentage (.865) last season en route to his second consecutive A-Sun all-conference selection and the program’s first-ever appearance (team or individual) in the NCAA Division I Regionals. White was second to Cornfield in all of the above categories, coming in with a 74.1 stroke average, one Top 5 finish, three Top 10 efforts and a .660 winning percentage. Sebastian Lopez Bulla, a solid No. 3 from last year, also joins Cornfield and White as the only three players to have played in every tournament for the Spartans last season.
