Spartanburg, S.C. – With the regular season opener just a few days away on Friday, the USC Upstate men’s soccer team will play its final exhibition game of the preseason when it plays host to Bluefield Tuesday night at 7 at County University Soccer Stadium.
Upstate stands 2-0 on the preseason exhibition portion of its season. The Spartans have already claimed a 2-0 victory over Belmont Abbey on Aug. 17 and a 2-1 win over Bob Jones in a match hampered by a steady rain in the second half last Thursday. Upstate looks to go undefeated in the preseason for the second consecutive season after going 3-0 last year.
Leon Schwarzer scored both goals in the 2-0 win over Belmont Abbey and saw two more Spartans find the net in the 2-1 win over Bob Jones. Lukas Sommer netted the first goal in the game against the Bruins, while Rinaldi Alphonse scored the game winner on a redirected shot from Dustin Bailey to account for the scoring. Alphonse has recorded a game-winning goal in a preseason exhibition game in each of the last two seasons.
Upstate will look to close out the exhibition season on a high note leading into Friday’s season opener against UNC Asheville. The Spartans are 1-1-1 against the Bulldogs in the last three seasons, including last year’s season-opening 3-3 tie.
Admission to Tuesday’s exhibition with Bluefield and all regular season home games throughout the season is free of charge.
