The USC Upstate men’s tennis team ushers in the 2014 fall season this weekend when the Spartans host the USC Upstate Fall Classic from the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.
Competition begins Friday at 1 p.m. and will feature regional foes Davidson, Furman, Kennesaw State, Presbyterian, UNC Asheville and Wofford.
“We are excited to be hosting this tournament once again, and our team is ready to play and get the fall season started,” Upstate head coach Oliver Trittenwein said. “We have a good field of competition participating again this season, and the interesting part about that is it will give us a good look at some of the teams we will be facing again in the spring.”
Spartans Jamie Yates and Matt Bennion are scheduled to compete in the doubles draw Friday at 1 p.m. and will face Daniel Kripak and another member of the UNC Asheville team. Rajanvir Dharni and newcomer Lenhard Haupt are paired with P.H. Broyhill and Steven Weaver of Presbyterian in the opening round. Ramon Simonetti and Ignacio Garrido received a first round bye.
In singles action, Haupt will participate in the black draw and battle Thomas Panoulas in the first round, while Dharni is slated to face Parks Schoen of Wofford in the opening match. Simonetti earned the No. 2 seed in the bracket and will take on either Galen Arney of Furman or Reid Dillon on UNC Asheville in the second round.
Spartan sophomore Felix Ewers is matched up with Josh Swindler of UNC Asheville in the opening round of the green draw, while Yates is scheduled to take on Brett Landau of UNC Asheville. Garrido will play Patrick Longest of Wofford and Matt Bennion will face Ryan Massinople of Furman.
