High Point, N.C. – Two Panthers scored their first goals of the season and High Point shutout its fifth straight opponent at home en route to a 2-0 victory over USC Upstate Thursday evening from Vert Stadium.
Kelsey Perrell connected for the game-winning goal midway through the first half when her shot in the 20th minute found the back of the Upstate net. Upstate keeper Ellen Bright saved an initial shot from Bri Jean-Charles, but Perrell knocked in the rebound to put the Panthers on the board.
Bright finished with a season-high 11 saves and leads the Atlantic Sun Conference with 60. In addition, the Fort Mill, S.C., native upped her career total to 169 and moved into fifth place on Upstate’s all-time list.
“We battled hard and unfortunately gave up a first half goal,” USC Upstate head coach Abby Minihan said. “We are looking forward to Saturday to prove to ourselves that we can make strides to put us in a good position for conference play.”
Tyler Gordon added an unassisted goal in the 71st minute with a bending shot that reached the corner of the Upstate goal.
Upstate closes the week Saturday at 7 p.m. when the Spartans travel to Asheville, N.C., to face UNC Asheville from Greenwood Soccer Field.
