Raleigh, N.C. – Ramon Simonetti captured three singles victories to advance to the quarterfinals of the singles consolation bracket and lead the USC Upstate men’s tennis team this past week at the ITA Carolina Regional.
Simonetti opened play with a 6-2, 6-2 loss to South Carolina’s Gabriel Friedrich in the main draw. The senior followed with three straight wins in the consolation bracket to advance to the quarterfinal round. Simonetti began with a straight set 6-1, 6-3 victory over Dre Jamon of North Carolina A&T followed by a 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 triumph over Duke’s Ryan Dickerson during the Round of 16. He made it to the quarterfinal round with a 7-5, 6-3 win against Luke Johnson from Clemson.
Simonetti also earned a doubles victory along with teammate Ignacio Garrido in the consolation bracket. The duo defeated Jon Oneal and Lorenz Schwab of Campbell 6-3, 6-0.
Felix Ewers added a singles win in the main draw after earning a 6-1, 6-0 victory over North Carolina A&T’s John Wilson.
The Spartans close out their fall season Oct. 31-Nov. 1 in Wilmington, N.C. at the UNCW Team Invite.
