The USC Upstate men’s soccer team closes out its home schedule Saturday evening as it welcomes the 22nd-ranked Florida Gulf Coast Eagles to County University Soccer Stadium for a 7 p.m. matchup.
Upstate will be holding its Senior Night festivities prior to the match as it honors six players who will be playing their final home game as a Spartan. The contest will also serve as the program’s annual Coaches vs. Cancer Game as a way to raise awareness and funds in the battle against the deadly disease. A raffle will be held during the game with the winner receiving a signed soccer ball by the Upstate men’s soccer team.
The Spartans (5-4-1, 1-1-1) are back on the field for the second time in four days after battling Stetson to a 0-0 draw Wednesday evening in Spartanburg. Gordon Wild attempted a match-high seven shots for Upstate while Hassan Haddad added three saves in goal.
Wild leads the nation heading into the weekend in goals per game, points per game, shots per game, shots on-goal per game, goals and points. He also continues to lead the A-Sun in goals, points and shots. Leon Schwarzer tops the conference in assists while ranking 13th nationally in points per game and 15th in assists per game. Haddad sits third among the league’s goalkeepers in goals against average, and is fourth in both saves and save percentage.
As a team, the Spartans have the nation’s seventh-best scoring offense at 2.30 goals per contest.
Florida Gulf Coast currently sits at 5-3-3 overall and 3-0-1 in the A-Sun under ninth-year head coach Bob Butehorn. Dylan Sacramento leads the Eagles with nine goals and 12 points, while Kamar Marriott and Rodrigo Saravia have dished out three assists apiece. Goalie Nathan Ingham has collected 27 saves for a 0.54 goals against average and .844 save percentage.
FGCU holds a 7-0-1 lead in the all-time series over Upstate including a 1-0 victory last season in Fort Myers, Fla.
