The USC Upstate women’s soccer team hits the road for the second straight week in conference play Saturday evening as it faces the Lipscomb Bisons at 6 p.m. from the Lipscomb Soccer Complex.
Upstate enters the match with a 2-8-1 overall record and 1-0-0 mark in the A-Sun after opening conference play last weekend with a 2-0 victory at NJIT. The Spartans received goals from Kate Winegarner and Caroline Keener, while Ellen Bright collected her second shutout of the season with four saves. The goal by Winegarner was her team-leading fourth of the season while Keener picked up her first.
Bright was recognized for her effort on Monday by being named the A-Sun Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in her career. The senior is the first Upstate player since former Spartan goalkeeper Sarah Plantz in 2013 to be selected A-Sun Defensive Player of the Week.
Winegarner has collected a team-high 10 points this year with Kenzie Major contributing three assists. Winegarner is tied for fifth in the league in goals, points and assists, while Major is tied for third in assists. Bright has added 75 saves for a 1.53 goals against average. She leads the A-Sun in saves, and ranks fifth nationally in saves and 19th in saves per game.
Lipscomb currently sits at 6-2-4 on the year and 1-0-0 in A-Sun play after defeating Kennesaw State 1-0 in double-overtime on Sept. 26 in its conference opener. The Bisons are led by third-year head coach Kevin O’Brien. Maycie McKay leads Lipscomb with six goals and 14 points this season and is tied for the team-lead at two assists along with Natalie DuBoise and Elizabeth Ashwood.
