Macon, Ga. – USC Upstate freshman guard Deion Holmes has been named the A-Sun Men’s Basketball Co-Newcomer of the Week following his performance last week in three home games for the Spartans, it was announced this afternoon by the conference office.
Holmes earned the first weekly honor of his career from the A-Sun after leading Upstate in scoring with 22.7 points per game while contributing 4.3 rebounds per contest. He scored over 20 points in all three games highlighted by eclipsing his career-high twice in points. For the week, Holmes posted a 42.5% (17-of-40) mark from the field, 57.1% (12-of-21) behind the three-point arc and 88.0% (22-of-25) at the free-throw line.
The Chesnee, S.C. native initially compiled a career-high 22 points last Friday against Georgia Southern before coming off the bench the following day versus The Citadel to score 26 points. Holmes began the week with 20 points and a career-high six rebounds against Winthrop on Nov. 24.
He shot over 40.0% from the field and 50.0% from three in all three contests, and made 17 of his final 18 free-throw attempts on the week.
Holmes currently ranks third in the conference in free-throw shooting (88.6%), fourth in scoring (17.3) and 10th in three-point shooting (43.5%).
