USC Upstate senior center Brittany Starling has been named the Player of the Week by both the Atlantic Sun Conference and College Sports Madness for her performance last week as the Spartans went unbeaten in three games, it was announced today.
Starling earns the third A-Sun Player of the Week honor of her career, and first this season, after helping lead Upstate to a 3-0 record last week with victories over Bob Jones, Southern Wesleyan and IPFW. The senior led the Spartans with 24.7 points and 16.7 rebounds per game, adding double-doubles in back-to-back games with Southern Wesleyan and IPFW. Upstate is off to a 4-1 start this season, its best opening to a season since 2008-09.
Starling scored at least 20 points in all three games and had 10 or more rebounds in two contests. She began the week with 24 points and nine rebounds in a 96-46 win over Bob Jones before posting two straight double-doubles. Starling compiled 28 points and 16 rebounds in the victory over Southern Wesleyan before pulling down a career-high 25 rebounds to go with 22 points at IPFW. The 25 rebounds are second-most in a game in school history and most by an A-Sun player this season.
For the week, Starling posted a 56.8% shooting percentage from the field.
The Spartans face Michigan tonight at 7 p.m. inside the Crisler Center.
