The USC Upstate men’s basketball team continues its six-game homestand Tuesday evening as it hosts the Winthrop Eagles at 7 p.m. inside the Hodge Center.
The Spartans (0-4) is back in action after falling to Bob Jones 83-79 last Saturday in Spartanburg. Marvin Smith recorded the first double-double of his Upstate career versus Bob Jones after compiling a career-high 18 points and 13 rebounds. Deion Holmes tied his career-high of 18 points while Mike Cunningham added 10 off the bench. Playing in his first collegiate game as a Spartan, Philip Whittington contributed 15 points and nine rebounds. Jure Span also dished out five assists.
Whittington currently leads Upstate this season with 15.0 points and 9.0 rebounds per game. Holmes chips in 13.3 points per contest and ranks 13th in the league in scoring. Josh Cuthbertson is contributing 4.7 assists and 6.5 rebounds per game to sit fifth in the A-Sun in assists and tied for seventh in rebounding. Smith also ranks tied for tenth in rebounding at 5.8 per game.
Winthrop enters the contest undefeated at 3-0 after victories over Hampton, Truett-McConnell and Jacksonville State. The Eagles are led by fourth-year head coach Pat Kelsey, who is 56-43 during his tenure at Winthrop. Xavier Cooks leads four Winthrop players in double-figures with 20.0 points per game, while also adding a team-best 9.3 rebounds per contest.
The Spartans are facing the Eagles for the 17th time in program history with the series tied at 8-8. Upstate also holds a 4-3 advantage when playing in Spartanburg. Winthrop defeated the Spartans 82-74 in Rock Hill during the last meeting on Nov. 13, 2013.
