USC Upstate freshman forward Gordon Wild was recognized by Top Drawer Soccer on Monday as he was named to the 2015 Division I Men’s Soccer Freshman Best XI Second Team.
Wild, a native of Steimel, Germany, started in all 15 games this season for Upstate and was one of the top players both nationally and in the Atlantic Sun Conference. The freshman, who was recently named First Team All-Southeast Region by the NSCAA, was selected as the A-Sun Freshman of the Year this season while also garnering First Team All-Conference accolades. Wild was also named to the A-Sun All-Tournament Team as the Spartans made their first-ever appearance in the A-Sun Championship Game.
The forward led the nation this season in five categories offensively including goals per game, points per game, shots per game, shots on goal per game and total goals, while ranking third in total points. Wild was voted the A-Sun Player of the Week four times including three straight from Sept. 8-21, becoming just the second player in conference history, and first since the 1995 season, to receive the recognition four times in a season. He was selected as the National Player of the Week by both Top Drawer Soccer and College Soccer News.
Wild led the A-Sun in goals, points, shots and shots on goal. Wild finished the season with 16 goals, including three game-winners, and two assists for a total of 34 points. He set Upstate’s Division I era record for career goals and points, as well as the Division I single-season record in both categories. Wild scored a Division I era record four goals for the Spartans in a school record-breaking 7-0 win at Presbyterian College, marking the first time in 11 years an Upstate player had scored four goals in a game. The four goals were also tied for seventh-most in a game in A-Sun history. He recorded his first career hat trick in a 5-4 home win over Winthrop.
