Women's Basketball: Upstate Hosts Furman on Saturday

The USC Upstate women’s basketball team returns to action on Saturday afternoon, welcoming Furman to the Hodge Center for a 2 p.m. matinee.

The Spartans enter Saturday’s game with a 5-4 overall record following an 87-46 loss at Georgia Tech on December 5.  Brittany Starling led the Spartans with 13 points. A’Lexxus Davis finished with a new career-high five points while Victoria Hadler tied a career high with five points. Starling, Brittany Clency and Kristen Dickerson each had four rebounds. The Spartans were held to a season-low in points and field goals made.

Upstate leads the Atlantic Sun in rebounding, offensive rebounds, free throws made, free throws attempted, field goal attempts and blocks. The Spartans rank second in scoring, defensive rebounds and rebound margin, and are third in assists and steals.

Starling leads the A-Sun in offensive rebounds and is second in blocks, rebounds, field goals and scoring. Brittany Clency is the league leader in free throw percentage. Travonda Haddock is fourth in the league in blocks and 10th in 23 assists. Raven Jefferson is sixth in steals.

Furman is 5-4 following a 77-39 loss at Georgia on Tuesday. Holli Wilkins leads the team with an average of 13.7 points per game. Whitney Bunn is averaging 11.8 points per game and scored a team-best 27 points against Winthrop on Nov. 24. Cierra Carter leads the team with an average of 8.3 rebounds per game and is scoring an average of 11.3 points per game.  The Paladins are 1-2 on the road, with losses at Virginia Commonwealth and Georgia along with a win at Richmond.

Saturday’s game is the 14th all-time meeting between the teams, with Furman leading the series 8-5. The Paladins claimed a 74-59 victory in the most recent meeting on January 7, 2015. USC Upstate is 3-2 inside the Hodge Center against Furman.

Upstate begins a two-game road trip on Monday, traveling to Morehead State for a noon matchup before taking on North Carolina on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
