The World Languages Program of the University of South Carolina Upstate will sponsor its annual REFLECTIONS: World Language Teachers’ Workshop, “Assessment in a Learner-Centered World Language Classroom,” from 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Monday, February 15 in the Sansbury Campus Life Center Ballroom.
The workshop is presented each spring for foreign language professionals teaching in elementary, middle and high schools, and at colleges and universities across the state. Participants will focus on accountability and effective strategies that will foster encouragement among learners to better develop their skills and demonstrate them during assessments.
Using the “can-do” statements from the National Council of State Supervisors of Foreign Languages and the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages as a benchmark, workshop participants will learn how to create activities for a learner-centered lesson, develop active learning and move into a guiding role in the learning cycle.
The facilitator is Todd Bowen, director of World Languages for Niles Township High School District 219 in Skokie, Ill., where he leads a department of 31 people and also teaches French. He is an adjunct instructor of methods at Northeastern Illinois University and is active in several world languages organizations including the Illinois Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ICTFL), the Central States Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (CSCTFL), the American Association of Teachers of French (AATF), and the National Association of District Supervisors of Foreign Languages (NADSFL). He also serves on the ACTFL Board of Directors as treasurer and as the convener for the newly-created Leadership Initiative for Language Learning (LILL), where he collaborated with national and regional partners to develop the inaugural Leadership Initiative in Language Learning (LILL) in July 2015.
