Macon, Ga. – USC Upstate junior center Michael Buchanan has been named the Atlantic Sun Conference Co-Player of the Week for the first time in his career this afternoon following his performance last week in back-to-back wins over North Carolina A&T and NJIT.
For the week, Buchanan averaged a team-leading 18.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per contest as Upstate increased its winning streak to a season-best four games. The Las Vegas, Nev. native also averaged 4.5 assists per contest while shooting 66.7% (16-of-24) from the field.
Buchanan began the week on Jan. 5 by recording his first double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds as the Spartans defeated North Carolina A&T 78-68 in their non-conference finale. He would also set a new career-high in assists against North Carolina A&T with five. He followed that performance last Saturday with a season-high 20 points, while adding seven rebounds and four assists, in Upstate’s 80-78 road victory at NJIT to begin conference play. Buchanan posted a 70.0% (7-of-10) shooting mark against North Carolina A&T and 64.3% (9-of-14) versus NJIT.
Buchanan is the second Spartan this season to earn a weekly award from the conference. Deion Holmes was named the Atlantic Sun Conference Co-Newcomer of the Week on Nov. 30.
