The USC Upstate Athletics Department will host its Second Annual Groundhog Day Luncheon to mark the start of the 2016 baseball and softball seasons on Tuesday, Feb. 2 at 11:30 a.m. in the Campus Life Center Ballroom.
Upstate is selling tickets for the luncheon. Tickets cost $10 for the general public and $5 for all USC Upstate faculty, staff, students and former players. The Groundhog Day Luncheon will feature head baseball coach Matt Fincher and head softball coach Chris Hawkins speaking about their teams and the upcoming season. Attendees will also get to meet members of both programs. The menu for the luncheon consists of white beans, ham shanks, tomato salad, green onions, cornbread and chocolate cake with ice cream.
The Upstate baseball and softball teams have enjoyed a large measure of success in recent years. The softball team has won three straight A-Sun conference championships, advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2013, 2014 and 2015, has been ranked in the national Top 25 polls and has had several individual award winners in the A-Sun and nationally. The baseball team has battled for conference titles and also has had several players drafted and sign with various Major League Baseball organizations.
The softball team begins its season on Thursday, Feb. 11 with a doubleheader at Gardner-Webb beginning at 2 p.m., while the baseball team opens its season on Friday, Feb. 19 at 4 p.m. against George Mason at Harley Park.
