Macon, Ga. – USC Upstate freshman Mike Cunningham was named the A-Sun Newcomer of the Week following his individual performance last week against Kennesaw State and Lipscomb, it was announced this afternoon by the conference office.
Cunningham is the third Spartan this season to receive a weekly honor from the conference. Michael Buchanan was selected as the A-Sun Co-Player of the Week on Jan. 11 and Deion Holmes the A-Sun Co-Newcomer of the Week on Nov. 30.
The freshman from Washington, D.C. averaged 17.5 points and 5.0 rebounds per game last week as Upstate went 1-1 including a 92-91 overtime victory on the road at Lipscomb. Cunningham was also perfect from the free throw line after going 15-for-15 on the week including 11 straight in the victory over Lipscomb. He dished out 4.0 assists per contest and averaged 36.5 minutes of playing time.

He would set two more career-highs in the contest with 11 made free throws and nine rebounds, while tying his career-best of six assists. The 11 free throws tied him for fourth in the Spartans Division I era along with Ty Greene, Torrey Craig, Ricardo Glenn and Luke Payne; and is the most by an A-Sun player without a miss since December of 2014. The overtime win at Lipscomb was the first for Upstate since defeating Kennesaw State 66-62 on Feb. 6, 2010.
