Macon, Ga. – USC Upstate junior pitcher Holly McKinnon has been named the A-Sun Co-Pitcher of the Week following her performance in the circle this past weekend during the Spartan Classic, it was announced this afternoon by the conference office.
McKinnon shares the weekly award with Kennesaw State’s Logan Viers after posting a 3-0 record and 1.50 ERA last weekend after Upstate won four games in the Spartan Classic over La Salle, Virginia, Morehead State and Ohio State. The junior tossed a total of 18.0 innings over her four appearances, and gave up three runs on 13 hits, two walks and 20 strikeouts. She limited opponents to just .197 hitting.
McKinnon compiled one complete game and combined for one shutout, which came during the Spartans 2-0 win over Ohio State Sunday afternoon to conclude the Spartan Classic. She came on in relief against the Buckeyes and picked up her team-leading fourth complete game of the season after allowing five hits, no walks and eight strikeouts.
The Ocala, Fla. native began her weekend by limiting Virginia to one run on three hits over six innings and registered four strikeouts. She made two other relief appearances against Morehead State, in which she picked up the win, and Virginia Tech. In those two games, she totaled five innings and surrendered two runs on five hits, one walk and eight strikeouts.
McKinnon earns her first career weekly honor from the conference. She is the second Upstate player to be recognized by the league this season as Amy Szymanowski was selected A-Sun Player of the Week on Feb. 22.
