The USC Upstate softball team begins a five-game home swing Wednesday afternoon as the Spartans host the East Tennessee State Buccaneers in a doubleheader at Cyrill Stadium.
Game one of the doubleheader will begin at 4 p.m. with game two slated for a 6 p.m. first pitch.
Upstate (25-4) recently wrapped up a season-long 10-game road trip last weekend by winning two out of three on the road at A-Sun preseason favorite Lipscomb to start conference play.
The Spartans began the weekend by splitting a doubleheader with the Bisons on Friday by winning the first game 3-2 and falling in game two 6-3. Upstate rallied to win game three, and clinch the series, 6-3 on Sunday in 11 innings. Ryan Rector and Holly McKinnon were recognized for their performance on Monday as Rector was named the A-Sun Co-Player of the Week and McKinnon the A-Sun Pitcher of the Week. For McKinnon, it was her third weekly honor of the season from the conference and second for Rector.
East Tennessee State (8-7) has lost three of its last four games entering the midweek matchup in Spartanburg and are playing for the first time since Mar. 13. The Buccaneers dropped a 7-6 decision to Kennesaw State to wrap up play at a tournament hosted by Tennessee Tech. ETSU is led by sixth-year head coach Brad Irwin. Madison Boyd leads the Buccaneers with a .425 average at the plate and 13 RBI, while Danielle Knoetze has hit three home runs. Lindsey Fadnek is 5-1 on the mound to go with a 1.97 ERA.
The Spartans are 14-4 all-time against ETSU in a series that dates back to the 2008 season. Upstate has won five in a row in the series and 13 of the last 15 meetings. The Spartans swept the Buccaneers in a doubleheader last season in Johnson City, Tenn.
