The USC Upstate softball team concludes a five-game home stand this weekend as the Spartans welcome the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles to Cyrill Stadium for a three-game series beginning Friday afternoon.
Game one of Friday’s doubleheader will begin at 3 p.m. with game two scheduled for a 5 p.m. first pitch. The series will conclude Saturday at 12 p.m.
Upstate (27-4, 2-1) returned home for the first time in over two weeks on Wednesday as it swept a doubleheader over former A-Sun member East Tennessee State. The Spartans defeated ETSU by scores of 3-2 and 3-0. Ryan Rector and Kendsey Chappelear both led Upstate on offense with three hits, while Rector drove in three runs including two in game one. Holly McKinnon earned a save in the first game and followed in game two by tossing her team-leading 11th complete game of the season.
Florida Gulf Coast (16-16, 0-0) is playing in its first conference games of the season after wrapping up a seven-game home stand by going 2-5 with wins over Green Bay and Iowa State. The Eagles are led by 14th-year head coach David Deiros. Kelsey Huff leads FGCU with a .385 average at the plate, while Racquel Fournet has hit four home runs and driven in 29 RBI. Riley Randolph is 6-2 on the mound to go with a 1.68 ERA.
Upstate is 12-8 all-time against Florida Gulf Coast after sweeping the Eagles in a three-game series last season in Fort Myers, Fla.
