Elon Uses Singles Wins to Defeat Upstate in Home Finale

The USC Upstate women’s tennis team dropped its final home match of the regular season against Elon on Thursday afternoon as the Phoenix swept singles play en route to a 6-1 victory at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.

Elon improves to 13-9 while Upstate falls to 0-20.

After Elon claimed the number three doubles match, Upstate won the first and second doubles matches to claim the doubles point. Anna Zoske and Filippa Ericson claimed a 6-3 victory over Kristen Ward and Natalia Janowicz at number one doubles. Carol Sigaki and Vale Zarama clinched the doubles point for the Spartans thanks to a 6-3 win at number two doubles over Taylor Casey and Erica Braschi.

Elon would go on to win all six singles matches in two sets and clinched the match after a 6-2, 6-0 win at number one singles.

Upstate concludes the 2016 regular season at NJIT on Saturday at 2 p.m. The winner of the Upstate/NJIT match will claim the No. 6 seed in the Atlantic Sun Championship next week, which will be held at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.
