Ryan Cornfield carded a final round 2-under 70 to lead the USC Upstate men’s golf team during the final day of the Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational from the par-72, 6,648-yard Country Club of Spartanburg.
Cornfield recorded his second consecutive top-10 performance and third in four events. The third round 70 gave Cornfield a total score of 211 (67-74-70) to finish tied for sixth place. Cornfield recorded four birdies on the day including three straight on holes 16-18 to end his round.
Upstate ended play at the Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational in a tie for fourth place with No. 47 Charleston Southern at 859 (279-287-293). The Spartans also counted scores of 75 by Sebastian Lopez Bulla, 72 from Taylor White, 76 by Trey Taylor and 80 from Tom Schofield.
Lopez Bulla was the second-highest Upstate golfer in the individual standings at 214 (70-69-75) to tie for 15th place, followed by White who tied for 29th at 219 (71-76-72). Taylor also tied with White in 29th position with rounds of 71, 72 and 76. Schofield rounded out the tournament for the Spartans tied for 58th place at 224 (72-72-80).
Playing as individuals, Matt Carter and Andrew Purcell concluded the tournament tied for 67th and 83rd place. Carter had a round of 74 on Tuesday for a 226 (79-73-74) and Purcell added a career-low round of 73 to finish at 234 (85-76-73).
Gardner-Webb took home team championship accolades at the Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational after shooting a final round 283 and finished the tournament with a total score of 847. GWU’s Vincent Blanchette won individual medalist honors with a 14-under score of 202, winning by four strokes over Charleston Southern’s Austin James and Andrew Novak of Wofford.
Upstate concludes its spring season April 17-19 at the A-Sun Men’s Golf Championships from the Legends Course at Chateau Elan in Braselton, Ga.
