Spartans Have Solid Day at Phoenix Invitational

Elon, N.C. – The USC Upstate outdoor track and field team recorded three wins at the Phoenix Invitational on Saturday held at the Jerry and Jeanne Robertson Track and Field Complex. The meet was the final tune-up for the Spartans before the A-Sun Championships.

Essence Jackson won the 800-meter run in 2:12.40. Ashleigh Torres finished eighth in the event with a time of 2:18.75. Courtney Bradley scored a fifth place finish in the 200-meter dash (25.24), followed by Semaj Tolliver in seventh (25.34) and Heaven Briggs in eighth (25.43). In the 400-meter dash, Bradley finished in fourth (57.23) followed by Briggs in sixth (57.68).  KeAndrea Ladson finished in eighth place in the 100-meter dash (12.61) and the 100-meter hurdles (14.71).

Molly Bliss scored a fifth place finish in the 1,500-meter run (5:08.58). Kennedy Holton finished in third place in the 100-meter hurdles (14.64). Destinie Sykes scored a third place finish in the triple jump (11.28 meters) followed by Audriana Jones in fourth place (10.70 meters). Jones finished in ninth place in the long jump (4.91 meters). Jazmine Burse finished in fifth place in the shot put with a throw of 10.61 meters. The 4×400-meter relay team of Briggs, Jackson, Bradley and Torres finished in third place with a time of 3:58.56.

Dorian Jones picked up his second win in the 1,500-meter run in as many weeks as he crossed the finish line in 3:55.63 ahead of Martin Morrow in fifth (4:08.13) and Marcus Miles in ninth (4:13.92). Desman Martinhad a solid day in the field as he won the triple jump with a distance of 14.06 meters and finished in third in the long jump (6.42 meters). Benjamin Bapuopeleh finished in fourth place in the triple jump (11.84 meters) and sixth in the long jump (5.68 meters). Upstate had three top-10 finishes in the men’s 200-meter dash, led by Ezequiel Sepulveda in fifth place (22.48). Darius Jones finished in seventh place (22.60), followed by James Jones in eighth place (22.73). The Spartans also had three top-10 finishers in the 800-meter run led by Miles in fourth place (1:58.46).

Ronald Collins, Jr. scored a pair of top-10 finishes as he finished in sixth place in the 100-meter hurdles (16.01) and seventh in the 400-meter hurdles (1:00.10). Cameron Pratt led the Spartans in the 400-meter hurdles with a fifth place finish (58.36). Dorian Jones finished in sixth place (1:59.72) followed by Roman Mealing in seventh (2:00.05). James Jones finished in ninth place in the 100-meter dash (11.26). Darius Jones finished in fifth place in the 400-meter dash (50.63). Jaquille Mosley‘s throw of 11.69 meters was good enough for fifth place in the shot put. Kane Philson finished in third place in the discus throw (39.41 meters) as well as the hammer throw (37.14 meters). Bryson Hatten finished the hammer throw in fourth place (32.61 meters).

Upstate returns to action on May 13-14 at the Atlantic Sun Championships in Jacksonville, Fla.
