The USC Upstate men’s tennis team fell just short of reaching the NCAA Tournament Sunday morning as the fourth-seeded Spartans fell to No. 2 seed North Florida 4-0 in the finals of the A-Sun Men’s Tennis Championship from the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.
Upstate’s season ends with a 9-14 overall record while North Florida, the A-Sun’s automatic qualifier to the 2016 NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Championship, improves to 11-11 on the season.
Ramon Simonetti and Lenhard Haupt were both named to the All-Tournament Team following their impressive performances over the three-day tournament.
The doubles point was close the entire way, as both teams split results on court one and two to put the deciding match at the attention of court three. UNF won at number two and three doubles to take the point and go ahead of the Spartans 1-0. The number one duo for Upstate of Simonetti and Ankush Arora earned a win in doubles play as they defeated 24th-ranked Jack Findel-Hawkins and Yannick Zuern 6-4.
Singles action would also play out in similar fashion as North Florida claimed first set wins in four of the six matches, while the Spartans claimed the first on courts one and four. Simonetti and Findel-Hawkins were locked in a tight three-set match before being suspended, while Haupt was one game away from a win in the number four match. Simonetti was tied with Findel-Hawkins at one set apiece, and Haupt led Julian Bradley 6-4, 5-4.
Sahil Deshmukh clinched the championship for UNF following his 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 win at number five singles.
