Busy adults and nontraditional learners will soon have a new opportunity to earn a credential at a pace that fits their active lives.

Beginning in August 2016, the University of South Carolina Upstate will offer a certificate program in Project Management at the USC Upstate Greenville Campus.

Students will learn and apply skills that will enhance their project management competency and  marketability in pursuing project management career opportunities.

The program is divided into two courses, Project Management Fundamentals and Advanced Project Management. The principles presented in the courses will apply to all types of projects. Each course will meet over a 16-week period for approximately three hours per week.  Classes will be a balance of classroom and online presentations.

The Project Management Fundamentals course is designed for business professionals with less than five years experience as a project manager or team member. The course offers an extensive introduction to the principles and best practices of project management, reinforces knowledge with team projects completed with local nonprofits, and prepares participants for the PMP certification examination.

The Advanced Project Management class will provide training and development on project management topics beyond the “Project Management Body of Knowledge Guide,” prepare participants to manage larger and more complex projects, aid participants in improving project management within their organizations and reinforce knowledge through experiential learning.

Participants will earn 48 professional development units (PDUs) from these courses.

The instructor for the course is Dr. Steve Sanders, president of S2 Construction Management Consultants, LLC. Sanders has been involved in engineering and construction project management since 1983 as a practitioner, educator, trainer, and consultant. He is a former tenured faculty member at Clemson University in engineering and construction management, where he currently serves as an adjunct faculty member.

Sanders received his bachelor’s degree from the United States Military Academy, a master’s degree in engineering and construction project management from Auburn University and earned a doctorate in engineering and construction management from Penn State. He was certified as a Project Management Professional (PMI) in 1998.
