For the second consecutive season, USC Upstate men’s golfer Ryan Cornfield will participate in postseason play as the senior competes in the Franklin, Tenn. Regional of the 2016 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship May 16-18 at the Vanderbilt Legends Club.
Cornfield, nine other individuals and 13 teams will take to the course Monday-Wednesday aiming to advance to the NCAA Nationals May 27-June 1 at the Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Oregon. The Franklin, Tenn. Regional is being hosted by Vanderbilt at the par-72, 7,190-yard Vanderbilt Legends Club’s North Course. The three-day tournament will be played over 54 holes with the low five teams and the low individual not on those teams advancing to the finals.
“I am thankful that Ryan had a great week of practice having the opportunity to play different courses each day this week,” said head coach Todd Lawton. “He is confident but also continues to be consistent with his routine and process. That is one of his best attributes. He hasn’t played this course but appreciates the challenge it offers, and I know he is physically and mentally prepared for the tournament.”
Cornfield, a native of Dudley, England, will be joined in the field individually by Ryan Cole of James Madison, Matthew Lowe of Richmond, Jose Montano of Xavier, Patrick Cover and Thomas Eldridge of UNC Wilmington, Joey Lane of Virginia Tech, Jake McGlone of UNC Greensboro, Ryan Wenzler of Wright State, and U Minn Woon of Fairleigh Dickinson.
The 13-team tournament field consists of: Texas, Vanderbilt, LSU, Washington, Virginia, Houston, Pepperdine, Kennesaw State, Michigan, Troy, East Carolina, Tennessee-Martin and Georgetown.
Cornfield became the first Upstate golfer last season, male or female, to advance to the NCAA Regionals since the Spartans moved to Division I in 2007-08. He would finish in a tie for 23rd place at the Chapel Hill, N.C. Regional.
This season, Cornfield was a unanimous selection A-Sun First Team All-Conference after tying for fourth place at the A-Sun Men’s Golf Championship, second-best in program history behind Josh Gallman. The two-time A-Sun Men’s Golfer of the Week honoree led the team this season with a 71.44 stroke average to also rank third in the conference. He had 15 rounds of par or better, and logged five top-10 and three top-5 finishes, while registering one victory. Cornfield finished the season with four top-10 performances in his final five events, including three straight at the Furman Intercollegiate, Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational and A-Sun Championship. Cornfield compiled four of the lowest rounds on the team this season of 64, 67 and 69 twice.
He earned his second career victory at the Furman Intercollegiate where he tied a tournament record of 13-under par. Cornfield’s round of 64 at the Furman Intercollegiate tied for the lowest round of any A-Sun golfer this season and also set a new school record.
