The USC Upstate baseball team returns to Harley Park for the first time in over two weeks on Friday as the Spartans open a three-game Atlantic Sun Conference series against FGCU. The Spartans and Eagles open the series on Friday at 6 p.m. followed by a 2 p.m. matchup on Saturday and the series finale at Noon on Sunday.
Upstate is 18-24 overall and 1-10 in league play following a 4-1 loss at No. 2 South Carolina on Wednesday. Cody Brittain tied a career-high with nine strikeouts and struck out five of the first six Gamecock batters but took the loss as a bunt single in the seventh inning gave South Carolina the go-ahead run. James Fowlkes has reached base in 23 consecutive games after an RBI single in the fourth inning.
Brittain leads the A-Sun with a .399 batting average as well as four triples. He is second in slugging percentage (.615) and fifth in hits (57) and total bases (88). Fowlkes is eighth in the league with six home runs while Charlie Carpenter is eighth with 12 doubles. Tyler Jackson is second in the league with 74 strikeouts. He leads the conference and is 17th nationally with 11.68 strikeouts per game.
FGCU is 20-23 overall and 6-6 in the league after dropping a series at home to North Florida last weekend. The Eagles are led by Dave Tollett who is 483-287-3 in 14 seasons. FGCU leads the all-time series 16-8 after winning two of three against Upstate last season.
