After taking a break for exams, the USC Upstate baseball team will return to the field on Wednesday night as the Spartans travel to Columbia to face No. 2 South Carolina in a nationally televised game on the SEC Network.
The Spartans will play in front of the television cameras in Columbia for the third consecutive season as the 2014 matchup aired on Fox Sports South and last year’s contest was shown on SEC Network +.
Upstate is 18-23 and 1-10 in the Atlantic Sun after being swept at Stetson on April 23-24. The Hatters won by scores of 9-3, 9-5 and 9-2.
Senior outfielder James Fowlkes enters tomorrow’s game having reached base in 22 consecutive games. Classmate Cody Brittain leads the Atlantic Sun in batting average (.407) and triples (4), is second in slugging percentage (.629), fifth in hits (57) and seventh in runs scored (34).
South Carolina split a pair of games against No. 1 Florida last weekend in Columbia. The Gators won Friday’s opener with the Gamecocks claiming Saturday’s matchup. Sunday’s game was cancelled after rain arrived in the fourth inning.
The Gamecocks won the first meeting of the season on March 15, 12-6, at Fluor Field in Greenville. Upstate is 0-10 all-time against South Carolina.
In addition to being televised on the SEC Network, a live audio stream as well as live stats will be available on www.upstatespartans.com. Updates will also be posted on the Upstate baseball Twitter page (@UPSTBSB).
The Spartans return to Harley Park this weekend for an A-Sun series against Florida Gulf Coast beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday.
