LakePoint, Ga. – The USC Upstate men’s cross country team has been picked to finish in fourth, while the women are projected seventh, by the league’s coaches in the ASUN Cross Country Preseason Polls released this afternoon by the conference.
The men earned 40 points in the preseason poll for a fourth place prediction. In 2015, Upstate recorded a fourth place finish at the ASUN Championships, but will have to replace First Team All-Conference performer Griffin Eubanks. Upstate welcomes four newcomers along with nine returners.
Defending conference champion Lipscomb was picked to repeat after earning 64 points and all eight first place votes. North Florida was picked to finish second with 54 points, followed by Florida Gulf Coast in third with 50 points. Kennesaw State (31 points) was chosen to finish in fifth while NJIT (18 points), Stetson (17 points) and Jacksonville (14 points) round out the field.
The women tallied 17 points following a seventh place finish last season at the ASUN Championship. The Spartans will have a new look in 2016 as eight newcomers join five returners.
Lipscomb, the defending league champion, was picked to finish in first place with 64 points and eight first place votes. North Florida was chosen to finish in second with 53 points, followed by Jacksonville with 49 points and FGCU with 42. Stetson (28 points), Kennesaw State (27 points) and NJIT (8 points) round out the field.
Upstate opens the 2016 season next Friday as it hosts the Eye Opener Invitational at Milliken Research Park at 6:30 p.m.
