The USC Upstate men’s soccer team is back in action on Saturday evening as it returns home to County University Soccer Stadium to host the High Point Panthers in a non-conference game at 7 p.m.
Upstate fell in its road opener on Tuesday, 3-1, at Appalachian State, dropping its record to 2-2 on the season. Joel Bunting netted his team-leading third goal of the season, all coming in the last two games, while Calon Minors dished out his second assist and now leads the team in that category. Goalkeeper Davis Smith, making his second career start, grabbed two saves.
High Point enters the weekend matchup with a 4-0-1 overall record following a 1-0 victory over Marshall on Wednesday. The Panthers, led by second-year head coach EJ O’Keeffe, has also picked up wins this season over East Tennessee State, St. Bonaventure and Loyola. Siggi Benonysson leads the HPU offense with 10 points on four goals and two assists this season, while Keegan Meyer has given up five goals for a 0.96 GAA.
The Spartans and Panthers are meeting for the seventh time in program history with Upstate holding a 5-1 lead in the all-time series. The Spartans won the first five meetings in the series before High Point picked up a 1-0 win in the last meeting back during the 2009 season.
