LakePoint, Ga. – Senior guard Raven Jefferson has been selected to the ASUN Preseason All-Conference Team while the USC Upstate women’s basketball team has been predicted to finish fifth in the ASUN Preseason Coaches Poll, it was announced this afternoon by the league office.
Jefferson earns her first Preseason All-Conference honor after averaging 9.4 points per game and 4.6 rebounds per game last season. Jefferson scored a career-high 23 points in the ASUN Tournament quarterfinal game against North Florida and made five 3-pointers against North Florida on Jan. 26 and March 4. She finished in double-figures in 14 games.
Upstate garnered 33 points in the preseason poll for the fifth place projection, which marks the second consecutive year that ASUN coaches have picked the Spartans to finish in fifth place.
Jacksonville was chosen as the preseason favorite after earning five first place votes and 60 points. FGCU was picked to finish in second place with two first place votes and 55 points, followed by Stetson with one first place vote and 53 points. North Florida collected 36 points to finish just ahead of Upstate in fourth place. Kennesaw State (23 points), Lipscomb (17 points) and NJIT (11 points) round out the preseason coaches poll.
Stetson’s Brianti Saunders and Jacksonville’s Kimberly Dawkins have been named the ASUN Player and Defensive Players of the Year. North Florida’s Claire Ioannidis was named the Fan-Voted Preseason Player of the Year while teammate Maiya Rumph was the Fan-Voted Defensive Player of the Year.
ASUN media members also voted Upstate to finish fourth in the league. FGCU to win the league as the Eagles accumulated 222 points and 12 first place votes
Upstate opens the 2016-17 season inside the G.B. Hodge Center on Friday, Nov. 11 against Converse at 8:30 p.m.
