The USC Upstate softball team had 12 players from its 2016 squad named Easton/NFCA Division I Scholar-Athletes while the Spartans were selected as a Division I All-Academic Team, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) announced recently.
The 12 Upstate softball players who received the award are: former Spartans Amy Szymanowski, Lindsay O’Steen, Caley Chappel and Amanda Storch, and current members Ansley Gilstrap, Lexi Shubert, Brittany Case, Kendsey Chappelear, Kristen Wright, Kori Wancheck, Abbie Millete and Ryan Rector.
The Spartans finished with a team grade-point average of 3.0 or better for the tenth straight year after registering a 3.540. The 3.540 team grade-point average turned in by Upstate in 2015-16 was ranked 12th-best nationally out of the 99 Division I teams recognized by the NFCA as a Division I All-Academic Team.
A total of 5,152 softball players across seven membership divisions earned Easton/NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete honors for the 2015-16 academic year. NCAA Division I, with 1,240 honorees, had the most student-athletes with a 3.5 grade-point average or higher.
