Upstate Finishes Road Trip this Weekend at Holy City Hoops Classic

The USC Upstate men’s basketball team concludes its season-long seven-game road trip this weekend as it travels to Charleston, S.C. to compete in the Holy City Hoops Classic hosted by The Citadel at McAlister Field House.

The Spartans are one of four teams competing in the three-day tournament along with The Citadel, Campbell and Colgate. Upstate plays Campbell Friday at 4 p.m., The Citadel on Saturday at 12 p.m. and Colgate on Sunday at 1 p.m.

The Spartans (3-4) are back in action for the third time this week after dropping a 90-83 decision at Auburn on Tuesday. Mike Cunningham and Michael Buchanan both led Upstate offensively with 20 points each, while Buchanan collected his second double-double of the season with a career-high 15 rebounds. Malik Moore also set a new career-high in rebounds with 12.

The Spartans outscored Auburn 51-48 in the second half and led 41-37 overall in points from the bench. Upstate finished the game shooting 42.1% (32-of-76) from the field.

Cunningham currently leads four Spartans in double-figures this season with 14.6 points per game. Along with Cunningham, Buchanan contributes 13.6 points per contest, Deion Holmes 12.7 and Ramel Thompkins 11.9. Buchanan also adds a team-best 9.4 rebounds per contest and Josh Cuthbertson dishes out a team-leading 4.4 assists per game. Philip Whittington leads the ASUN with 13 blocks and 1.9 blocks per game.

The Citadel enters the weekend with a 4-3 overall record while Campbell sits at 3-3. Colgate has a record of 2-4 on the season. Upstate is facing Colgate for the first time in program history, and trails Campbell 5-3 and The Citadel 3-0 in the all-time series.
