Upstate Travels to Tuscaloosa Thursday to Face Alabama

The USC Upstate men’s basketball team hits the road on Thursday evening as it travels to Tuscaloosa, Ala. for an 8 p.m. EST non-conference matchup against the Alabama Crimson Tide inside Coleman Coliseum.

The Spartans won their third straight game on Thursday after defeating Presbyterian College 76-48 in Spartanburg. Josh Cuthbertson scored a career-high 22 points to lead Upstate offensively while Malik Moore added 21. Ramel Thompkins was the third Spartan to score in double-figures after contributing 11 points.

Upstate posted a season-best 59.1 percent mark behind the 3-point line and concluded the game shooting 49.1 percent (26-of-53) from the field. The Spartans out-rebounded Presbyterian College 34-32, and held a 12-9 advantage in points off turnovers, 4-2 in fast break points and 12-10 in points from the bench. Both teams recorded 11 second chance points.

Michael Buchanan currently leads five Upstate players in scoring this season with a double-double of 14.5 points and 10.3 rebounds per game. Along with Buchanan, Mike Cunningham contributes 13.2 points per game, Deion Holmes 11.9, Moore 10.8 and Cuthbertson 10.0. Cuthbertson also dishes out a team-high 4.6 assists per game and Philip Whittington has 17 total blocks.

Alabama has recorded wins this season over Coastal Carolina, Ball State, Saint Louis and Charleston Southern, and is coming off a 65-56 loss at 24th-ranked Oregon on Dec. 11. Dazon Ingram leads the Crimson Tide this season with 12.0 points per game while Donta Hall adds a team-high 5.9 rebounds per contest. Alabama is under the direction of second-year head coach, and former NBA champion, Avery Johnson.

The Spartans and Crimson Tide are facing each other for the first time in program history.
