The USC Upstate men’s basketball team finishes a three-game homestand to begin conference play on Saturday afternoon when the Spartans welcome the Jacksonville Dolphins to the G.B. Hodge Center for a 2 p.m. matchup.
Upstate saw its season-long four-game winning streak come to an end on Thursday evening with a 73-65 defeat to North Florida. Malik Moore came off the bench to score a team-high 16 points for the Spartans, and Michael Buchanan added 13 points and Philip Whittington 10. Buchanan also had a team-high nine rebounds and Josh Cuthbertson contributed eight. Mike Cunningham dished out a game-high six assists which was one short of equaling his career-best of seven set earlier this season against Jacksonville State.
Upstate concluded the game shooting 42.6 percent (26-of-61) as a team. The Spartans held a 31-16 advantage over the Ospreys in points from the bench and tied 28-28 in points in the paint.
Jacksonville earned an 82-81 victory on Thursday at NJIT for its first conference win of the season. The Dolphins currently have five players averaging in double-figures led by J.R. Holder at 17.9 points per game. Devin Harris also contributes a team-leading 6.0 rebounds per contest. Jacksonville is under the direction of fourth-year head coach Tony Jasick.
Upstate is facing the Dolphins for the 19th time in program history with Jacksonville holding a 12-6 lead in the all-time series. The series dates back to the 2007-08 season when the Spartans joined the ASUN.
