The family of Dr. John B. Edmunds, Jr. will hold a memorial service at 2 p.m. Tuesday, February 7 in the Sansbury Campus Life Center Ballroom.

Dr. Edmunds was the very first professor hired by the University upon its founding in 1967. For 43 years he served as a professor of American history and built a career distinguished by excellence as a teacher, a scholar and an administrator. For four decades he inspired students with his enthusiastic teaching and encyclopedic knowledge of South Carolina history. To all who worked with Dr. Edmunds, he was more than a colleague; he was a friend and a mentor.

During his lengthy career at USC Upstate, Dr. Edmunds served in numerous positions from professor to chair of the Division of Social and Behavioral Sciences to Dean of the School of Humanities and Sciences. He also served on the Spartanburg County Commission for Higher Education. In 2014, the Dr. John B. Edmunds Jr. Distinguished Lecture Series was established and dedicated to bringing significant scholars in history, political science, philosophy, and religion to USC Upstate and the Upstate community each spring.

Dr. Edmunds is survived by his wife Judy McGrath  Edmunds and two daughters.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for memorials to be made to either the Dr. John Edmunds Endowed Scholarship Fund or to the Dr. John B. Edmunds, Jr. Distinguished Lecture Series. The online giving link is www.uscupstate.edu/edmundsgiving.
