USC Upstate senior pitcher Holly McKinnon was named the ASUN Player of the Week by College Sports Madness on Tuesday following her performance on the mound last week as the Spartan softball team went 4-1 with wins over N.C. State and Lipscomb.
McKinnon compiled a 2-1 record with a 0.64 ERA and one save in four appearances against N.C. State and Lipscomb. The senior allowed just two earned runs in 22.0 innings of work during the week and struck out 25 batters while limiting opponents to a .132 average at the plate.
The Ocala, Fla. native began the week by throwing a complete game as Upstate defeated N.C. State in game one of a doubleheader 9-1 in five innings. McKinnon finished the game surrendering one run on one hit, no walks and seven strikeouts in five innings of work. She retired the first 14 batters she faced and held a perfect game for 4.2 innings of the five-inning win.
McKinnon helped the Spartans open ASUN play last weekend by winning two out of three over Lipscomb including a doubleheader sweep. She picked up a win and a save in two of the games and had 10 strikeouts in the 4-1 game one victory. The 10 strikeouts mark the fifth time this season for McKinnon that she has registered double-digit strikeouts in an appearance.
Upstate travels to Appalachian State on Wednesday afternoon for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
