The USC Upstate men’s tennis team remains in the state of Alabama this week as it wraps up a four-match road trip against the South Alabama Jaguars and Lamar Cardinals in a pair of non-conference contests.
The Spartans are slated to face South Alabama at 2 p.m. Wednesday afternoon in Mobile before remaining in town on Friday for a 10 a.m. match against Lamar.
Upstate (3-7) began its four-match road trip with a pair of losses to Samford and Troy on Sunday and Monday. The Spartans were edged 4-3 at Samford on Sunday and fell 7-0 at Troy on Monday afternoon.
Ankush Arora, Francisco Neto and Ignacio Garrido all earned singles victories against Samford, while Neto and Felix Ewers recorded a win in doubles play. Against Troy, the Spartans sent three of their singles matches into the third set in Ewers, Arora and Lenhard Haupt. Garrido and Fernando Bernardes were tied 4-4 in their doubles match before going unfinished.
Neto leads Upstate in singles competition this season with a 6-4 overall record highlighted by a 3-3 mark at the No. 5 position. In doubles play, Bernardes and Garrido are 6-1 highlighted by four wins coming at No. 2 doubles.
South Alabama currently sits at 15-2 on the season and has won 14 matches in a row including a 4-0 defeat of Arizona on March 4 as part of the H-E-B Invitational in Corpus Christi, Texas. Juan Cruz Soria leads the Jaguars in singles play with a 22-5 record, while Clement Marzol and Tuki Jacobs have combined to go 6-1 in doubles matches.
Lamar has a 7-5 overall record entering the weekend after topping Prairie View A&M 7-0 on March 6. Michael Feucht leads the Cardinals in singles competition with a 6-3 record playing at No. 1, while two doubles combinations have both collected five wins.
The Spartans return home on Thursday, March 16 for a 2 p.m. match against Texas Rio Grande Valley.
